Recently I stumbled across this article published on CNN Money. The article highlights the struggles organizations that require highly-specialized, scarce talent are facing. If you are in the healthcare industry, odds are that you and your organization might be facing some of the same problems.

Eye of the unemployment storm is a great chance to recruit
August 13, 2009
Last Friday’s BLS job report was the eye of the unemployment hurricane. There are many theories about why this unexpected slowing in job loss is happening. I believe the slow can be directly linked to the Trillions of dollars the Obama administration has put into the economy over the past few months. Kudos to them for putting a stop to the bleeding but it is only temporary. Just like the brief calm at the eye of the storm this feels good, but don’t forget that the worst part is yet to come. Many believe we will see a 10% or 10.5% unemployment rate before the situation gets better in 2010. If we are looking at the glass as half full, and this is in fact the eye of the unemployment storm, at least it means it is half way over, right?

Healthcare Administration: A Booming Industry.
July 16, 2009
There’s never been a better time to join the healthcare industry. Half of the 20 U.S. occupations projected to grow the fastest over the next few years are in the health services fields. Employment in healthcare administration is expected to grow fastest in practitioners’ offices and in services for home healthcare. During the next decade, about 3.5 million new jobs are projected in health services (that’s about 16 percent of all new jobs total). This is higher than any other industry.

Hunting for physicians in rural areas
May 28, 2009
Relocating people to rural areas can be tricky. In areas where there isn’t enough locally grown talent, however, relocation has to be an integral part of the equation. When trying to convince someone to relocate, one must advertise for the city every bit as much as the position itself. Job ads that highlight the low- cost of living, the proximity to nature, and the short commute generally get a better response, but the process of recruiting doesn’t stop there. Here is what Maine is doing to confront the shortage of physicians.
