Leading Policy research group Commonwealth Fund says we can save 1.8 trillion on Healthcare.
July 1, 2009
The Commonwealth Fund delivered a report showing data that suggests that if we were to focus healthcare reform on creating an “exchange” with private insurers and a government Medicare type provider made available to people in need. They claim the very presence of a low cost government alternative as well as a central hub will create competition, saving us 800 billion dollars, and in the long run almost 2 trillion. Obama in Chicago TODAY-selling his reform plan to the AMA
June 15, 2009
And so it begins – the wheels on the ground are finally turning as President Obama meets at the AMA convention where he’s expected to push his theory of asking doctors to save money by reducing costs by not prescribing treatments that don’t make Americans healthier, and as the largest national representation of physicians (250,000), this is considered one of the major hurdles he will have to jump in order to garner support for the overhaul.
The plan is called socialism by some, and a band-aid when we need surgery by others, but he’s standing against protests from both sides, and hoping for a warm albeit unlikely welcome from the physicians he will speak to today at the AMA convention.

NPR Interview with Peter Orszag: Quality Over Quantity
May 14, 2009
In mid April, Peter Orszag, the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, spoke to NPR about planning and implementing President Obama’s new healthcare “package”. One of the key goals of the Obama administration’s plan, beyond insuring over 10 million people in need who are currently uninsured by current policies, is to shift the focus from “more care” to “quality of care.”
“Estimates suggest that as much as $700 billion a year in health care costs do not improve health outcomes. It occurs because we pay for more care rather than better care,” Orszag says. “We need to be moving towards a system in which doctors and hospitals have incentives to provide the care that makes you better, rather than the care that just results in more tests and more days in [the] hospital.”
